Book Title/Description
[No Cover Image] History of Montenegro
by Francis S. Stevenson. Hardcover (May 1971)
[No Cover Image] The Falcon & the Eagle: Montenegro & Austria-Hungary, 1908-1914 by John D. Treadway. Paperback (January 1998)
[No Cover Image] Montenegro: Its People and Their History
by William Denton. Hardcover (July 1977)
cover The Bridge on the Drina; Ivo Andric
From a Nobel prize winner, this is a fictional, yet truthful, history of the bridge at Visegrad which stood for centuries. The tensions between the residents of Bosnia and Herzegovina become apparent. From the Turkish occupation to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the factions intertwine throughout the history of the town and the bridge. Although told, or translated, in a slow, laconic style, the writing was wonderful. The individual stories were well told and kept the history of the bridge moving forward. After reading it, I felt that I understood this part of the world better -- and that I had a better perspective on my ancestors (Radenovic or Ragenovich) from Montenegro who emigrated to the US in the 19th century
[No Cover Image] The Spirit of Thomas G. Masaryk 1850-1937: An Anthology; George J. Kovtun
cover Czechoslovakia Between Stalin and Hitler: The Diplomacy of Edvard Benes in the 1930s by Igor Lukes (1996)

[No Cover Image] Letters from Prague: 1939-1941; Raya Czerner Shapiro, Helga Czerner Weinberg
cover Valley of the Shadow: After the Turmoil, My Heart Cries No More; Erich Anton Helfert
This book is told from the perspective of the Sudetenland Germans as they were relocated to Germany after the war. The consequences of the appeasement in 1939 were long-lasting
[No Cover Image] Under a Cruel Star: A Life in Prague 1941-1968; Heda Kovaly

Finally, other historical books that we've found to be of interest over the last few years include:

cover Brunelleschi's Dome: How a Renaissance Genius Reinvented Architecture; Ross King
This is a fascinating book, based on the actual historical documents from the construction of the Duomo in Florence (Firenze). The engineering of a dome of this size was based on revolutionary and, to some degree, on untested construction methods.
cover Gilded Dinosaur: The Fossil War Between E.D. Cope and O.C. Marsh and the Rise of American Science; Mark Jaffee
cover Dragon Hunter: Roy Chapman Andrews and the Central Asiatic Expeditions; Charles Gallenkamp
Wine and War: The French, the Nazis and the Battle For France's Greatest Treasure ; Don Kladstrup, Petie Kladstrup
This book details the conflict between the Germans and the French for control of wine during World War II. Sources include numerous anecdotes from many winemakers and their families which lends credibility to the narrative.
cover Band of Brothers: E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest -- Stephen E. Ambrose
The start-to-finish biography of one company as it traveled from boot camp to D-Day to the Battle of the Bulge to the finish of the war at Hitler's Eagle's Nest.
