The Mountain Image Award Winners

The Mountain Image category includes books with a primary focus on mountain images with text in a subordinate role. Images may include photographs, drawings and reproductions. There are two lists of books on this page. The first list includes all of the winners in the Mountain Image category since the award was first made in 1995. The second list includes all of the finalists. Please note that a number of these books are still unavailable in the US (at least through Amazon.com) and that these are shown in red.

Year   Mountain Image Winning Titles and Author
2006

World Climbing: Images From The Edge
Simon Carter

Comments from the jury include:

bullet“Carter consistently dodges the clichés of climbing photography and captures with unsettling intimacy moments of truth and beauty on the great walls of the world,” jury member David Leach says.
2005

Mountain Ranges of Colorado
John Fielder

Comments from the jury include:

bullet“A wonderful testament to the observation that luck favours the prepared and persistant. How else do you get a mountain goat to lie down and sit still for 10 minutes, 15 feet from where you your 4x5 view camera is set up? A great eye coupled with wonderful technique, and then married to a beautifully produced book.”
2004 Great Sand Dunes National Park: Between Light and Shadow
John B. Weller

The author photographed this Colorado landscape once a month for three and a half years, accompanying the images with his own essays, poetry, and journal entries.

2003 Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of Life and Land
Subhankar Banerjee

Banerjee, a photographer, in collaboration with six essayists, presents a portrayal of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a unique landscape made up of equal parts of beauty and hazard. The U.S. is currently considering this area for oil drilling. "This book does what it was meant to do: stimulate the senses and debate. It accomplishes both beautifully," says Ramsay.

2002 Bruno Engler Photography
Susan Engler Potts, Vera Matsarova Engler

A compilation of mountain images by Canadian Rockies mountaineer, filmmaker and photographer Bruno Engler (1915-2001). This book also wins the Canadian Rockies Award for the best book on the local area.
2001 The High Himalaya
Art Wolfe (photos) and Peter Potterfield (text)

"Visually, a superb book," says Maria Coffey, one of the 2001 judges. "Wolf brilliantly portrays so many facets of Himalayan culture and landscape. This is the work of an artist with a great passion for the places and people he captures on film."
2000 Mountain Photography
Bradford Washburn

The book reflects the eight decades that Bradford Washburn has spent documenting mountain landscapes from the Grand Canyon to Mount Everest. Edited and compiled by Antony Decaneas, the book includes one hundred large format mountain photographs selected from the over 10,000 images in the Washburn portfolio.

1999 Summit: Vittorio Sella, Mountaineer And Photographer, The Years 1879-1909
Vittorio Sella

At the turn of the century, carrying a supply of glass-plate negatives, Italian photographer Vittorio Sella climbed scores of the world's most perilous mountains and photographed them, many for the first time. His strikingly beautiful photographs offered groundbreaking scientific and documentary information and are still used by climbers to map routes. This is the first comprehensive volume of Sella's photographs. "The book is convincing in its brilliant text and images and it shows Sella's significant contribution to mountain photography," jury member Michael Pause says.

A Special Mention award was earned by Fat Tire: A Celebration Of The Mountain Bike by Amici Design

1998 Stone and Silence
Linde Waidhofer

This is a book of landscape photographs taken in the desert country of the American southwest. Stone and Silence made a "particularly stunning impression" on the jury members.
1997 Tibetan Voices: A Traditional Memoir
Brian Harris

1996 Tibetan Portrait: The Power Of Compassion
Phil Borges

1995 The Last Forbidden Kingdom: Mustang, Land Of Tibetan Buddhism
